PREMIER Sihle Zikalala will be leading the provincial school monitoring programme to assess the readiness of schools for the start of the new schooling year especially those that were affected by the recent storms in the province.
Zikalala will assess the impact of of the recent storm disaster incidents in the schools especially in rural areas. This includes UMkhanyakude district which is one of the districts that has been hit the hardest, a statement from the provincial government said.
Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu said the province had been affected by inclement weather since the beginning of December 2021.
“The first report that the department got was that there were 106 schools that were affected, and then a follow-up report indicated, in the months of December and January that 186 schools had been affected throughout the province,” he said.
He further said some schools were extensively damaged and would need mobile classrooms.
The statement from the provincial government also said the premier would also visit the Mkhuze Airport to conduct an oversight inspection and receive a first-hand report on progress made to the development of the airport to-date.
“The Mkhuze Airport, which has the second longest runway in KZN, is strategically located in the heart of the province’s northern tourism corridor and has massive potential to impact the economic development of the uMkhanyakude region.”
