A light aircraft was crushed and its pilot injured after it crashed into a maize field in Merrivale, Howick.

Durban:- The pilot of a light aircraft was taken to hospital after the plane he was flying crashed into a field in the Merrivale area in Howick this morning (Tuesday).

Midlands EMS said it responded to the scene on Birnhamwood Road just after 10am.

When paramedics arrived, they found a plane that had crashed into a maize field. The pilot was out of the wreckage.

“Midlands EMS Advanced Life support paramedics tended to the pilot and stabilised him on scene.”

The pilot was then was transported to a hospital in Hilton for further care and treatment.

“He is currently in a stable condition.”

Midlands EMS said the South African Civil Aviation Authority and local authorities had been alerted to the crash.

“Thank you to all the farmers and community for your help,” added Midlands EMS.
