LOOK: Sixteen injured in KZN truck accidents

Fifteen farm workers and a truck driver were injured in two separate accidents in KZN today.

DURBAN - Fifteen farm workers were injured on Wednesday morning when the truck they were travelling in overturned on the R614, at the KwaSwayimane turn-off in Wartburg, near Pietermaritzburg.

KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert McKenzie said paramedics and emergency services attended the scene at abound 8.30am.

He said a truck transporting farm workers overturned and 15 people were injured and treated by paramedics at the scene.

“Eight of the patients sustained serious injuries while the remaining patients sustained minor injuries,” he said.

McKenzie said 14 people were transported to the hospital.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.

Meanwhile, just before 1pm on Wednesday, Netcare 911 responded to a collision on Sarnia Road in Umbilo, Durban, involving two heavy motor vehicles.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said when paramedics arrived on the scene they found one of the truck drivers trapped in the cab.

He said the driver had sustained serious injuries.

“The man was treated on scene by a Netcare 911 emergency care practitioner while a Netcare 911 rescue technician used hydraulic tools to free the man.

“Once stabilised the patient was transported by ambulance to a specialist facility for the care he required,” said Herbst.
