DURBAN - A man was seriously injured after he was shot by hijackers on Buttery Road in Umgeni Park, Durban, today.
Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell said the incident occurred at approximately 11.30am today.
He said the Marshall Security Emergency Dispatch Centre was contacted by a member of the public who reported the shooting incident.
“Upon the arrival of our armed response officers and special operation team members it was established that the driver of a Toyota Tazz had been approached by two suspects, one of them was armed with a firearm.
“During the incident the motorist was shot twice and the suspects managed to flee with only the victim’s cellphone and wallet, leaving the injured man in his vehicle,” said Powell.
Powell said members of the special operations team stabilised the victim at the scene before handing him over to Netcare 911 paramedics, who arrived a short while later.
“Two spent cartridges were found at the scene. The scene was secured and handed over to the SAPS.
“A search was conducted for the suspects. However they still remain at large after fleeing into a nearby informal settlement,” he said.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said reports indicated that the adult male, believed to be a meter reader, had been shot while walking to his car.
“When medics arrived on scene, they found that the patient had sustained serious injuries and was given first aid by members of the Marshall Security special operations team,” he said.
Herbst said the patient was treated at the scene by a Netcare 911 emergency care practitioner and taken by ambulance to a hospital.
