Durban - Two people died and 49 were injured in several serious accidents on KwaZulu-Natal roads this weekend.
On Saturday, Medi Response spokesperson Paul Herbst said when paramedics arrived on the scene of a serious accident on the N2 southbound, in the vicinity of Sibaya, they found that a single vehicle had rolled several times.
Herbst said two people were found to be in critical condition and required treatment.
“One of the two patients, who was presumably unrestrained, was located approximately 50 metres from the vehicle, down an embankment,” he said.
He said Medi Response and Lenmed advanced life support paramedics worked to stabilise the injured before transporting them to Lenmed EThekwini hospital for further care.
KZN Private Ambulance said its paramedics attended to a few accidents on Saturday.
KZN Private Ambulance spokesperson Craig Botha said paramedics responded to a collision on the N2 at Ifafa on the KZN south coast for a six-vehicle crash.
“Paramedics quickly assessed the scene and found that eight occupants had sustained injuries. Five patients had sustained serious injuries and three patients had sustained minor injuries,” he said.
The patients were treated on scene before being transported to a hospital for further treatment, he said.
Botha said on the N2 at Boboyi just outside Port Shepstone, two vehicles were involved in a collision.
“Paramedics assessed the scene and found that six patients had been injured. Three patients had sustained serious injuries and six patients had sustained minor injuries.
The patients were treated on scene before being transported to hospital for further treatment,” he said.
On the N2 in Nseleni outside Richards Bay, Botha said four vehicles were involved in a collision and one person was declared dead at the scene.
“Sadly, one occupant sustained fatal injuries and succumbed to their injuries before emergency services arrived,” said Botha.
He said three other patients sustained serious injuries and one patient had sustained minor injuries and they were transported to hospital for further treatment.
In another accident on the N3 near the Tugela Plaza outside Ladysmith on Saturday a total of 21 people were injured during an accident.
On Sunday morning, Emer-G-Med Paramedics spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said one person was killed and two others were injured in a head-on collision on the M4 Ruth First Highway near uMhlanga Rocks just after 7am.
Van Reenen said upon arrival, paramedics found a light delivery vehicle and a Volkswagen Citi Golf were found to have collided.
“The driver and only occupant of the Golf, a male believed to be approximately 40 years of age, was found to have sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead on arrival of paramedics. Two occupants of the LDV (light delivery vehicle) suffered moderate injuries and were treated and stabilised on scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further care,” he said.
Meanwhile, Botha said KZN Private Ambulance Service responded to the scene where a truck had overturned on the N2 near Esikhawini.
He said paramedics found that three patients had sustained serious injuries and were treated on the scene before being transported to a hospital for further treatment.
On the R34 John Ross highway at Alton intersection near Richards Bay, Botha said a bus and bakkie had been involved in a collision on Sunday.
“Paramedics quickly assessed the scene and found that three occupants had been injured. Two patients had sustained serious injuries and one patient had sustained minor injuries. The patients were treated on scene before being transported to hospital for further treatment,” said Botha.
