DURBAN - A CRIME clean-up campaign in Pietermaritzburg by members of the SAPS netted six suspects on several crimes.

The suspects will make their first appearance in court on Friday.

They were arrested on Wednesday during an operation conducted at Imbali by the Plessislaer police officers.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the operation was part of their quest to clean up the area of criminality. She said while the police were conducting patrols, they spotted a vehicle with six occupants.

“Upon searching the vehicle, the police found 13 rounds of ammunition, six cellphones and a key belonging to a vehicle that was taken during a house robbery at Imbali on Tuesday night. A wallet with the complainant’s cards was also seized from the suspects,” she said.

Mbele said the suspects were questioned about the whereabouts of the vehicle that was taken during the robbery.

According to Mbele, the investigation led police to Caluza where the VW Polo which was stolen during the house robbery was recovered.

She said a home-made shotgun was found inside the vehicle.

“Six suspects aged between 17 and 28 were placed under arrest for being in possession of stolen property as well as unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.”

Both vehicles were taken to the police pound for further investigation, said Mbele.

Meanwhile, three of the suspects were positively linked to the case of house robbery.

“The suspects will be profiled to establish if they are linked to other cases reported in Plessislaer and Pietermaritzburg. The suspects will make their first court appearance tomorrow,” she said.
