DURBAN - Police are monitoring the R66 in the Wombane area in Eshowe after residents blocked the road with burning tyres on Tuesday morning.

At about 6am, alerts were circulated on social media warning motorists to avoid the area because the road was closed.

“Protest action on R66 between Eshowe and Gingindlovu in the vicinity of Wombane, due to electricity issues in the area,” posted Riot & Attack info South Africa.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele confirmed that there was protest action on the R66 main road at Wombane in Eshowe.

Mbele said community members blockaded the road towards Eshowe and Gingindlovu.

“They were burning tyres and trees,” she said.

Police said the road is now open, and the traffic is flowing.

“Police are at the scene to monitor and stabilise the situation,” said Mbele.
