The ILembe District Municipality said repair work at the Sundumbili Waterworks in Mandeni are expected to be completed by this Friday.

This comes after a fire broke out at the plant due to transformer that exploded at the weekend.

Xolelwa Mazibuko, ILembe District Municipality operations manager for the Mandeni area, said cleaning of the site commenced after insurance assessors completed assessments this morning.

“The district municipality appointed an electrical contractor, who is currently on site and they have commenced with the repairs. It is estimated that repairs may be complete in three days from today. Eskom has also appointed a contractor to start with the replacement of the new transformer,” she said.

Mazibuko said the municipality was aware that some households having started experiencing low pressure, while others do not have water.

She added that although water tankers had been dispatched, the turnaround time of tankers was longer at the moment, as they have to travel to fetch water in Maphumulo and eTete in KwaDukuza.

She added that while the repairs were expected to be complete by Friday, the restoring of the water supply would take longer.

“This would require the commencement of the treatment process at the Sundumbili Waterworks, the filling of command and distribution reservoirs. It would take much longer for the system to recover and longer for all households to get water. We just have to get through the actual repairs for now,” stated Mazibuko.
