Durban - A 24-year-old man is expected to appear in the Umbumbulu Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for the murder of a pregnant woman, who is known to him, in her home in Umgababa, south of Durban.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the suspect faces charges of murder and arson which are being investigated by Umkomaas SAPS.

Gwala said the incident took place in Umgababa on Tuesday just before 6pm.

“It is alleged that on August 2, 2022 at 5.51pm at Umgababa, a 42-year-old woman who was eight months pregnant had an argument with a known suspect who stabbed her,” she said.

She said the house that the victim was in, was set alight including the vehicle that was parked in a garage.

“A 24-year-old suspect was placed under arrest after he tried to stab himself,” said Gwala.

In May, The Mercury’s sister publication, The Post, reported that Shaun Naicker was arrested after his partner Jackie Naidoo, 35, burnt to death in a fire at her home in Westham, Phoenix.

It was reported that after a four-year relationship, Naicker packed his belongings and left the council flat that he shared with Naidoo and her 12-year-old son.

Her son had already left for school.

Moments later, her neighbours heard glass exploding and then saw the fire. They called the fire department and police for help.

Naidoo was found lying on her stomach on her bed. Naicker has appeared in the Verulam Magistrate's Court.
