Tip-off from undercover US agent leads to arrest of Durban man for child pornography

SOUTH African police have arrested a 53-year-old man for distribution of child pornography following a tip-off from the an undercover agent based in the US.

The man is from Ridley Park in Malvern.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said police received information the undercover agent on May 12 that the man was distributing child pornography on social media.

Gwala said the Provincial Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) – Serial and Electronic Crime Unit conducted an investigation and the suspect was identified.

Police conducted a search-and-seizure operation yesterday morning in Ridley Park where a cellphone as well as three memory sticks were seized.

“The cellphone was analysed at the scene and images of child pornography were found on the device,” said Gwala.

She said the A 53-year-old man was arrested for possession of child pornography.

The man is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today.
