Durban - Two men, aged 27 and 28, were killed in a suspected hijacking at Vanrova New Flats in Emona, oThongathi, early on Sunday morning.

Provincial police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said that just after 2am, the police were called to Emona in oThongathi for a shooting and hijacking complaint.

Ngcobo said when police arrived at the scene, they were told that the victims who had been shot were rushed to a nearby medical centre.

“Two victims aged 27 and 28 were declared dead on arrival, whilst the third victim is receiving medical attention,” she said.

Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram said Rusa members were called out to the scene just before 1.40am. When reaction officers and medics arrived, they found a large crowd on the property.

He said the body of a 28-year-old man was discovered on the side of the road. He had sustained a single gunshot wound to his head.

“According to members of the public, the man and his two friends had been consuming alcohol outside their residence. Two suspects approached them and without warning fired a volley of shots in their direction,” said Balram.

Balram said the man fled towards the road, where he was shot in the head, while the other two men also sustained injuries.

Balram added that a white VW Polo belonging to the victim was stolen by the suspects.

Police said charges of murder, hijacking and attempted murder are being investigated by Tongaat SAPS.
