DURBAN: Police Minister Bheki Cele is expected to visit the family of slain Lieutenant-Colonel Jabulani Ndawonde in Durban today (Thursday).

According to the police, the acting commander of Ndwedwe police station was driving home when he was gunned down in a drive-by shooting in Ndwedwe, north of Durban, on Monday night.

The police said it was established from preliminary investigations that unknown occupants travelling in a mini pick-up truck opened fire on Ndawonde as they passed his vehicle.

The 56- year-old police officer succumbed to his injuries on the scene.

The incident came days after Minister Cele revealed - during the release of the quarterly national crime statistics - that 24 officers had been killed in the first three months of this year.

Cele is expected to receive a full briefing on the progress of the Ndawonde murder case at Ndwedwe police station.

He will then visit the family of the slain officer in Nsuze.

National Commissioner of Police General Khehla John Sitole directed the immediate mobilisation of the 72-hour Activation Plan following the incident.

The minister visited the scene where Ndawonde was gunned down.

This is a developing story.
