DURBAN - The eThekwini Municipality council meeting to elect leaders descended into chaos this afternoon after ANC supporters stormed the venue at the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban.

Videos showed dozens of people, some wearing ANC regalia could be seen singing and clapping as they walked into the meeting venue just before 6pm.

The meeting turned chaotic after the election of Speaker Thabani Nyawose, from the ANC, as it emerged that IFP councillors had abstained from voting for him.

This was despite the ANC and IFP announcing last week that they had reached an agreement regarding hung municipalities.

In terms of the agreement, the ANC and IFP were to allow each other to rule in the hung councils where each had the majority of votes.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier and ANC provincial chairperson Sihle Zikalala was seen engaging with IFP chairperson Thami Ntuli outside the meeting venue earlier yesterday.
