Durban - Fingers are being pointed at the notorious 'construction mafia' after a truck and a construction vehicle were set alight at a site in Manor Gardens on Monday night.

It is alleged that the security guard, guarding the site was accosted by four armed men who handcuffed him and locked him inside a store room.

Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, said the culprits then set alight the vehicles, including a TLB.

"The men fled the scene. Mayville SAPS is investigating a case of arson," she said.

According to Cato Manor Community Policing Forum chairperson, Janus Horn, he received a call from a patroller informing him about the fire.

"The land that the vehicles were in belong to a local school and is rented by a construction company. It is alleged that the suspects came in a blue VW Golf TSI. The fire department was dispatched and managed to get the fire under control," he said.

It is suspected that the men belonged to one of the business forums as they demanded to be included in projects taking place in the area.

While Horn could not confirm this, he said it was concerning that this was taking place in a residential area.

He commended police for responding to the incident so promptly.
