DURBAN – Two dogs who were rescued by a Kloof and Highway SPCA officer after treading water for 12 hours in a pond are now ready for adoption.

The dogs were rescued on October 28 after a member of the public reported hearing dogs howling the whole night.

SPCA field officer Doctor Mthombeni found the two dogs in the pond.

“The dogs had been treading water and trying to escape for over 12 hours when they were found by the field officer who immediately took action and rescued them from what would have been a fatal situation,” the SPCA said.

Once out of the pond, the dogs collapsed from exhaustion.

“Unable to even stand or walk, they lay on the side of the pond catching their breath quietly watching the field officer as he sat with them, equally exhausted after their rescue,” the SPCA said.

Both dogs were found to have worn their claws down to the skin trying to climb out of the pond.

“We would like to thank the member of the public who alerted us to their cries and ensured we were able to rescue them,” said the organisation.

Speaking to The Mercury today, Kloof SPCA manager Barbara Patrick said the two dogs are doing well.

“They are doing so well and are in our kennels and will be available for adoption soon. Sadly no owners have come forward to claim them yet,” said Patrick.
