Durban - Former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede has taken to social media to thank her supporters for continuing to rally behind her during her court appearances.

This is after she appeared briefly in the Durban High Court on Tuesday where she faces corruption charges. The matter was adjourned to July 18. Dozens of her supporters were outside court to show their support for her.

Gumede, who did not address her supporters on Tuesday, in accordance with the ANC’s step-aside rule, took to her Facebook account on Wednesday to express her gratitude for the continued support from her backers.

“I would like to thank everyone for their overwhelming support and presence during my court appearance. I appreciate what you do for me and our comrades who are co-accused. Your words, prayers, messages and presence continue to encourage us to stand. You are indeed our brothers and sisters, true comrades,” Gumede wrote.

She noted that while the court case had dragged on for three years, the support for her had not dwindled.

“You remain tireless, and have continued to support us. Thank you comrades, religious leaders and everyone who has stood by us,” Gumede said.

Responding to her message, supporters said they would continue to stand by the former eThekwini mayor as they believed in her innocence.

Fisoh Zama also declared his support for Gumede, vowing to stand by her throughout her troubles.

“We will always be with you, incoming eThekwini chairperson, regardless of what they try they will never succeed,” said Zama.

The chairperson reference was in relation to the ANC eThekwini regional conference which is expected to be held next week. Gumede will be contesting for the position of chairperson against Thabani Nyawose, the current speaker in the eThekwini council.

Another supporter Sabelo Zuma warned that any effort to bring Gumede down would not succeed.

“Your detractors will soon be humming another tune, just stay strong,” he said.

Many of the supporters said they believe that her court case was nothing but part of a smear campaign to tarnish her image.
