The longest street in Mamelodi, Tsamaya Road, should and will be named after late struggle stalwart, Moses “Bra Moss” Chikane.

This was according to ANC Tshwane Regional Chairperson, Dr Kgosi Maepa, who was speaking at the stalwart’s memorial service in Mamelodi this afternoon.

If all goes well it will be called : “Moss Chikane Drive”

Maepa was addressing a packed hall of friends, family and ANC members at the Mamelodi International Assemblies of God.

He said a decision was taken at the 2017 ANC conference in Nasrec.

"The stalwart would like to see the name and the legacy in the home where he participated as a liberation struggle activist.

"The stalwarts have proposed that the longest street in Mamelodi be named after Commrade Moss Chikane,” he said, much to the loud cheers of attendees.

Chikane was described as playing a pivotal role in the liberation struggle and was one of the key leaders of the United Democratic Front during the years the ANC was banned.

He was part of the Delmas 22.

The Delmas Treason Trial (1985–1988) was the prosecution of 22 anti-apartheid activists under security laws, with the intention of suppressing the UDF.

The defendants included three senior UDF leaders, Chikane, Mosiuoa Lekota and Popo Molefe, known as the "Big Three".

Chikane was the national co-ordinator of the former National Co-ordinating Committee for the return of exiles in the 1990s.

He later had a career as a diplomat for government.

In 2005, he was appointed as the ambassador to Germany. Five years later he was reposted to Zambia.

Chikane is survived by five sons and a daughter, three brothers and four sisters.

His funeral will be on Saturday.
