DURBAN - Police are still awaiting the results of a ballistics report to determine who killed 9-year-old Sadia Sukhraj two weeks ago.

The young girl was killed when criminals pounced on his fathers car while he dropped off her younger brother at a relatives house. The incident had initially been thought to be a hijacking, but it emerged in court that the arrested suspect only faced charges of theft, kidnapping and two counts of murder - for the death of Sadia and one of the suspects who was killed at the scene.

Police Minister Bheki Cele told media that a process is still ongoing to determine the events of the fatal day the young girl was killed in a hail of bullets. Cele could not reveal what the process was in determining who shot the child.

"On that one there is a process going on, we are not going to be able to emphatically tell the story at the present moment," he said.

It remains unclear who fired the fatal bullet.

One of the accused, Sibonelo Mkhize, had been with two other suspects when they allegedly stole the SUV vehicle at Sadia's grandparents’ house in Shallcross.

Pastor Shalendra Sukhraj, and an off-duty Warrant Officer, Hemant Rughoonandan gave chase firing shots, killing Sadia and one of the suspects. Rughoonandan was cleared by police watchdog Ipid days later.

Meanwhile, Cele said two weeks ago that police knew who third suspect was, but there has been no arrest since.

"The reason for the delay is that criminals, they cover each other. The person that gave us the information has been moving us from pillar to post even on the question of addresses for them... but we are very sure we will be able to reprimand the guy," he said.

Investigations into the case were still ongoing.
