Durban - Child rights activists in Durban have welcomed the news that Baby X's mother has been found guilty of the little girl's horrific murder.

The 34-year-old Chatsworth woman was found guilty of 16 charges including murder, child abuse, assault and failing to provide medical care.

Baby X died a result of a head wound on November 19, 2014.

Speaking to POST shortly after the judgment, Annie Varaden, a therapist at Sahara Women’s Shelter in Phoenix, said that justice had been served.

"Baby X had been badly abused in her young life. A child needs simple things to grow.

"Her mother should have sought help if she was unable to care for her. What her mum did was inhuman."

Director of the Phoenix Child Welfare, Aroona Chetty, said that while justice has been served, it had taken a long time.

"So many children are abused and it is traumatising that they have to wait years before justice is served."

Chetty said she was hoping that Baby X's mother would get a life sentence for the crime.

Earlier this year Baby X's 53-year-old grandmother died in prison.

She was accused of abusing the toddler by rubbing chillies in Baby X's private parts.
