'Terror' suspects expected back in Durban court

Durban - The 12 men who are allegedly linked to a string of 'bomb' attacks in and around Durban last year are expected to make an appearance in the Verulam Family Court today. 

The accused have arrived in court but it is uncertain what time proceedings are expected to begin. 

Farhad Hoomer, the groups alleged kingpin', made his last two appearances on his own as the court needed to verify voice samples. 

He is currently out on R200 000 bail. 

The other accused are Abasi Juma, Abubakari Ali, Mohammed Akbar, Muhammed Adil Sobrun, Omar Iddy and Ndikumana Shabani Umande, Thabit Said Mwenda, Mohammed Seidth and Amani Mayan and Goolam Haffajee. 

The accused face a raft of face charges including terrorism, murder, attempted murder, extortion, kidnapping,  contravention of the Explosives Act and arson.

The murder charges relates to the attack on the Imam Hussein Mosque in Verulam in May 2018 that claimed the life of Abbas Essop. 

Initially a total of 19 men were arrested and 7 were withdrawn. 

It has been previously reported that the trial is only set to begin in 2020.
