Merebank pensioner's alleged killer in court

Durban - A 37-year-old man accused murdering a Merebank pensioner who allegedly revealed her killer before taking her last breathe made a brief appearance in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. 

He is expected to apply for bail in December. 

Jithin Ramjaewan, of Phoenix was arrested and charged for the murder of 79-year-old Dhanwathie Fakira, who was found battered and stabbed in her Arcot Place home on November 25.

Fakira was found lying on her bedroom floor with multiple stab wounds to the face, neck and hand.

Relatives who had arrived at the pensioners home shortly after the attack told POST that the pensioner had allegedly revealed the name of her killer before taking her last breathe. 

They had been invited to her home for lunch. The grandmother lived alone. 

She was declared dead by paramedics on the scene.

Police arrested Ramjaewan the same day. 

Ramjaewan is expected to make a formal bail application on December 13.

He was remanded at Westville prison.
