The couple, Colin and Evelyn Daniel, were found dead by relatives in their home in Jasmine Crescent on Saturday night.
Colin, 37, unemployed, had a rope tied around his neck. He had hanged himself from the rafters. Evelyn, 36, a lecturer, was found on the floor with bruising around her neck.
The couple had three children and were recently separated.
A family friend, who did not want to be named, said the couple had been experiencing problems. “We did not think it would come to this. Both their families are completely distraught. They are concerned about the welfare of the children. Evelyn had separated from Colin.”
Neither family could be reached for comment.
Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said Newcastle police were investigating the circumstances around the incident and an inquest docket had been opened.
