Durban - The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda, has lauded the appointment of Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as the new provincial police commissioner.

Mkhwanazi’s appointment was announced by the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, in Durban on Monday. He has been acting provincial commissioner since May.

“On behalf of the provincial government, we would like to congratulate Lieutenant-General Mkhwanazi. We are pleased to have a person of his calibre in the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster. His knowledge and skills will contribute immensely in the fight against crime in the province,” said Kaunda.

He said the department had worked well with Mkhwanazi over the past six months to implement the provincial government’s crime-prevention strategy.

“Apart from the sterling work he has done in the stabilisation team, which is making breakthroughs in high-profile cases in the province, Mkhwanazi has been instrumental in the successful hosting of the Provincial Security Indaba and Crime Summit this year.”
