Durban - A man suspected of stealing a motor vehicle near Berea Park in Durban was shot and wounded by security guards on Wednesday.
Details of the incident are still sketchy but according to the Durban Crime Watch social media group, three men had arrived in a Silver Avanza along Berea Park Road.
It is alleged that one of the men attempted to steal a while Polo that was parked on the roadside.
It is alleged that security guards had noticed the men's suspicious behaviour and confronted them.
It is alleged that one of the men drew a firearm and shot at the guard who then returned fire.
It is alleged that one of the car thieves was shot on the leg. His accomplices fled the scene in the Avanza.
Police have converged on the scene and closed off the road. A short video clip posted on YouTube shows the damage to the Polo ignition area and the bloodstained car thief on the ground in pain.
Berea police are at the scene conducting investigations.
