DURBAN - ANC councillor Stanley Moonsamy who criticised the killing of black people in Phoenix claims he has received death threats.

Moonsamy has called for justice for the victims and the families of those who died in Phoenix during the unrest and looting in July.

A cellphone-recorded video of Moonsamy began circulating on social media addressing a crowd. He called for those arrested to be denied bail and for compensation for the families.

Soon after, Moonsamy said, he received calls and messages. Moonsamy refused to divulge the exact contents of the threatening messages he received.

He said the contents of the telephone calls and messages will be handed to police.

He opened a case at the Phoenix police station because he felt his life was in danger.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the matter was being investigated.

Another ANC councillor in eThekwini, who asked to remain anonymous, said the threats against Moonsamy should not be taken lightly, especially because there were allegations of police and security companies’ involvement in the Phoenix killings.

He said Moonsamy was being targeted because the criminals who killed people wanted to hide within the Phoenix community.

“The problem is that Moonsamy wants these criminals to be isolated. If the allegations that police and security companies were involved are true we have reason to be worried about Moonsamy’s safety and he needs to be protected,” said the councillor.
