Durban — As branches wrap up nominations for the top six positions at the coming ANC’s 55th national conference, the former KwaZulu-Natal provincial secretary is emerging strongly for the secretary-general position.

Mdumiseni Ntuli, who has already confirmed his availability for the position, got a shot in the arm when he received an endorsement by President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Ward 11 branch in Chiawelo in Soweto on Sunday.

The branch meeting which was attended by Ramaphosa, nominated him for the second term and Ntuli for secretary-general. The meeting also endorsed Paul Mashatile to deputise Ramaphosa and Stan Mathabatha for the chairperson position.

Nomvula Monkonyane and Pule Mabe were nominated for deputy secretary-general and treasurer respectively.

One of Ntuli’s lobbyists, Sabelo Sigudu, told the Daily News on Monday that the campaign was going very well and they were excited at the support he was receiving from various branches across the country.

Sigudu said Ntuli also received nominations from branches in the Western Cape including one where the national youth task team (member) Nonceba Mhlauli lives.

Despite being snubbed by various regions and the provincial executive committee in his home province which endorsed former Eastern Cape chairperson Phumulo Masualle in the secretary-general position, Ntuli appears to be getting a nod from other provinces which are pairing him with Ramaphosa.

Out of 11 regions in KZN Moses Mabhida (Pietermaritzburg) and Inkosi Bhambatha which incorporates Greytown, Dundee, Msinga and Nquthu want Ntuli as secretary-general.

The much-anticipated conference has been set for December 16 to 20 in a venue yet to be announced.
