Four KZN men to appear in court for possession of an unlicensed firearm

DURBAN - A SUSPECT who allegedly threatened a family in Mqedandaba, KwaZulu-Natal with a firearm is due to appear in the Estcourt Magistrates Court on Monday, alongside three others.

The suspects aged between 20 and 32 were arrested by police on Saturday for allegedly being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said police had recovered a firearm with its serial number filed off, two magazines and 11 rounds of ammunition.

She said: “An intelligence-driven operation was conducted by the SAPS team after allegations surfaced that a man was making threats, with a firearm, against a family at Mqedandaba, in the Amangwe policing precinct.”

Mbele said police followed up on the information and proceeded to the area.

“On noticing the police’s arrival a man and his friends fled in their vehicle. A chase ensued. All four men were arrested.”

She added that a search all four occupants of the vehicle were searched.

“All four men were immediately arrested and detained at the Estcourt police station.”

Meanwhile, two men aged 38 and 41 are expected to appear in the Vryheid Magistrates Court on Monday on charges of possession and dealing in dagga.

Vryheid SAPS were patrolling along the R33 Vryheid/Paulpietersburg Road at the Kambula farmers market when they spotted a vehicle with a Durban registration.

Mbele said the vehicle was immediately stopped and searched. Upon searching the vehicle, the police officers discovered that it was allegedly loaded with eight large bales of dagga wrapped with brown tape. The dagga weighed 150 kilograms and had an estimated street value of R750 000.

Two men were immediately arrested and detained at the Vryheid police station. The vehicle was impounded pending further investigation.
