Durban - Police are investigating two carjackings and an attempted murder after a delivery man was robbed and hijacked and another motorist was shot by a gang of criminals in Durban.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the complainant was delivering goods in Greenwood Park, north of Durban, when he was accosted by five gunmen on Wednesday at 1.20pm.

“At gunpoint, the suspects fired shots and then robbed him of his vehicle. A 40-year-old bystander was shot by the suspects and taken to hospital for medical treatment,” Gwala said.

“Charges of carjacking and attempted murder were opened for investigation.”

Swift Private Security, who responded to the scene, said it had received multiple calls and messages of gunshots in Ramchand Road, Effingham Heights.

“According to the residents on the scene, it was reported that four suspects held up the driver who was delivering stock to a local tuck shop.

“They stole his personal belongings, along with his GWM bakkie, while the other two suspects robbed the tuck shop for an undisclosed amount of cash and items,” Swift Private Security said.

“While the suspects were fleeing the scene, they hijacked another resident from Ramchand Road for his silver VW Polo and shot at him. The victim sustained a gunshot wound and was immediately transported privately to hospital for treatment.”

Swift Private Security said it was unconfirmed if the suspects arrived on foot or in a vehicle.

“Shortly after the incident, the GWM bakkie was recovered by the respective tracking teams in the KwaMashu area.”
