Durban — The KwaZulu-Natal legislature is expected to help set the record straight on lion attacks in northern KZN after it was petitioned to take action by stakeholders, the traditional authorities of Ukhukho, and Mlaba, the management of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and community representatives.

This follows reports of lions escaping and subsequent attacks by lions on livestock, and that escaped lions pose an imminent danger to humans.

KZN legislature spokesperson Wesley Canham said the lions escaped due to the reported fallen and inadequate fencing boundary in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park.

“We can not hold a meeting with everyone but we have made it a priority to engage with the representatives from the affected communities. We understand that this is not new to these communities but has been going on and on,” said Canham.

As a result, the committee will hold a meeting with the stakeholders and the representatives who had petitioned the legislature on the matter at the KZN Sharks Board, uMhlanga, on Saturday, August 27, 2022.

After the meeting, the chairperson of the portfolio committee on conservation and environment affairs, Sthembiso Mshengu is expected to hold a media briefing to clarify the position of the committee, and detail the work done by the committee in the past when confronted with similar situations.

The press briefing is expected to start at 12.30pm at the same venue.
