Durban - Umbilo police arrested a man in possession of a stolen firearm, ammunition and magazine while conducting a stop and search operation.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said that on Sunday, at 4pm, Umbilo police were conducting crime prevention duties when they spotted a suspicious male on Davenport Road and requested to search him.

“The 31-year-old man was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and was arrested,” Gwala said.

He was expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

According to information from a source, the man was found in possession of a 9mm Luger pistol, 11 live rounds of ammunition and one magazine.

“The firearm was checked on the computer and it came up positive on a Durban Central CAS ***/04/2021 theft of a firearm,” the source said.

The source added that the suspect would be profiled in order to establish if they were linked to other cases.
