Durban — A man’s body was discovered with his head hacked and brain matter exposed in oThongathi, north of Durban.

Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram said an anonymous tip led them to a brutal murder scene in Vanrova, oThongathi on Sunday evening.

Balram said the Rusa operations centre received an anonymous call from a member of the public reporting a group of individuals exiting a pathway. The passer-by requested a patrol after he felt the group were behaving in a suspicious manner.

He said reaction officers were dispatched to the area and arrived at the location at approximately 7.46pm.

“After a brief search, officers discovered the body of a male lying in a pathway. He was hacked on his head resulting in his brain being exposed. The identity of the deceased and the motive for the murder have not been confirmed at this stage,” Balram said.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said Tongaat police were called out to a murder scene at Van Rova Road where a 30-year-old man was killed.

“On arrival, police found the man with multiple open wounds to the head.

“A murder case was opened at Tongaat SAPS for further investigation.

“It is alleged by the witness that they were attacked by three males and he managed to escape and reported the matter to the police,” Gwala said.
