DURBAN - A man was killed in a hit and run, and an elderly woman was killed in a crash in two separate road incidents on Wednesday.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said the man, believed to be in his 50s, was struck by a light motor vehicle on Argyle Road on Wednesday evening.

“Emer-G-Med paramedics arrived on the scene to find the man lying in the roadway. Closer inspection found him to have sustained fatal injuries, and he was declared dead on the scene,” Van Reenen said.

Police had not commented at the time of publication.

The Mi7 National Group said an elderly woman was killed when the vehicle she was driving crashed into a tree.

Mi7 National Group emergency medical services were dispatched after reports of a motor vehicle crash on the R33 near Albert Falls, north of Pietermaritzburg.

“On arrival, medics found that water gushing across the road had caused two separate crashes at the same location,” the Mi7 National Group said.

The group said that at the site of the first crash, it was believed that the driver lost control of the vehicle after entering the water and the vehicle left the road. However, nobody was injured.

Paramedics then rushed to the site of the crash about 20m away.

“It is believed the driver of a bakkie had lost control again after entering the water, causing the vehicle to hit a tree,” the Mi7 National Group said.

It said the passenger, an elderly man, had sustained moderate injuries, and after being stabilised by Mi7 advanced life support paramedics, was transported to a local hospital for further treatment.

“Unfortunately, the driver of the bakkie, an elderly woman, had sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased by Mi7 medics on the scene,” the Mi7 National Group said.

“Mi7 rescue medics along with the New Hanover Fire Department managed to free the deceased from the wreckage with use of specialised hydraulic rescue equipment, or the jaws of life.”

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele confirmed the incident and said the woman was confirmed dead at the scene and the passenger sustained injuries and was taken to hospital for medical attention.

“A case culpable homicide was opened at Cramond police station for investigation,” Mbele said.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday evening, KwaZulu Private Ambulance (KZPA) service responded to the N2 near Hibberdene for reports of a collision.

KZPA said that when emergency services arrived, they found that three vehicles had been involved in a collision.

“Paramedics quickly assessed the scene and found that five patients had sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious,” KZPA said.

“The patients were treated on scene before being transported to hospital for further treatment.”
