Durban - A pensioner was treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at her home in Chadstone Place in Phoenix on Monday.

Durban Fire department North Divisional Commander Narend Birjalal said when they arrived the fire had been extinguished by bystanders.

"The fire was confined to the kitchen area. We not certain what caused the fire but it could have emanated from the stove. We had conducted the necessary checks to ensure the fire was completely off," Birjalal said.

Sources who came to the woman's aid alleged that the pensioner had been cooking when the fire began. In her efforts to save her home she tried to put off the fire. In that period of time, she had inhaled smoke.

It is alleged that her son who was in another room panicked and jumped out of the window to escape

The Phoenix Community Crime Watch Association(PCCA) thanked all the roleplayers who came to the scene to assist.
