Prominent oThongathi tow truck owner arrested for the possession of drugs and counterfeit money

DURBAN - A prominent tow truck owner based in oThongathi was due to appear in the Verulam Magistrate's Court on Monday for being in possession of drugs.

Charges of possession of drugs and possession of counterfeit money are being investigated by Tongaat SAPS.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the 52-year-old man was was arrested on January 29, 2022, at 1am by Tongaat SAPS.

Gwala said the suspect was arrested at Fairbreeze after he was found in possession of rock cocaine, mandrax and counterfeit money.

A reliable source said the tow truck owner was travelling in his Toyota Fortuner when a routine police patrol stopped him. The tow truck owner was allegedly found in possession of 100 pieces of rock, 30 bags of cocaine and R6 800 in cash.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said KwaZulu-Natal police were fulfilling their core mandate of serving and protecting the communities without fear or favour.

Mbele said police officers will not tolerate criminality and will ensure that criminals are put behind the bars even though the prisons are full.

“Police officers in the province will continue to fight crime to the bitter end and this is confirmed by the positive outcome achieved during intelligence driven operations around the province.”

During weekly operations which were carried out from January 17, to January 24, 2022, police arrested 2 064 suspects for crimes ranging from murders, attempted murders, robberies, fraud, possession of suspected stolen property, theft of motor vehicles, drugs, rape, assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, possession of suspect stolen property and other crimes.
