DURBAN – A Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officer was seriously injured when the vehicle he was in was smashed into by a truck on Friday morning.

Midlands EMS said its advanced life support Howick ambulances were dispatched to the N3 between Cedara and Merrivale just after 10.50am for a multiple-vehicle crash.

“Upon arrival, crews found the RTI vehicle off the road with extensive damage and three trucks that had also been involved in the same accident,” Midlands EMS said.

“The officer sustained serious injuries and required urgent advanced life support treatment before being transported to the hospital for further care.”

Midlands EMS said the exact cause of the crash was under investigation by the local authorities.

An update on the condition of the RTI officer could not be established.
