Durban — A KwaZulu-Natal court has handed a stepfather a 100-year prison sentence for the rape of his stepdaughter in August 2021.

On Monday, the KwaDukuza Regional Court convicted and sentenced the stepfather to 25 years on each count of rape.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said during that month, the 15-year-old teenage girl was sleeping in her room when she was awakened by her stepfather who jumped into her bed. Terrified and traumatised by the stepfather’s behaviour, she insisted that he leave her room.

“He overpowered and raped her while threatening her with violence,” Gwala said.

“The accused continued raping the victim whenever her mother was not around. Tired of suffering in silence, the victim informed her mother and the matter was reported to Ndwedwe police for investigation.”

Gwala said the docket was transferred to the KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.

“On August 24, 2021, the detective proceeded to the man’s home at Ndwedwe and arrested him on four counts of rape.

“He made several court appearances before he was convicted and sentenced to 25 years on each count of rape by the KwaDukuza Regional Court on August 29, 2022,” Gwala said.

Recently, the Camperdown Regional Court sentenced a father, 42, to 15 years’ imprisonment and deemed him unfit to possess a firearm. His name will also be placed on the National Register for Sexual Offences.

The suspect was arrested on June 19 in the Bhamshela area; he appeared before the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court on June 20 and was remanded in custody.

It is alleged that the day before the court appearance, he kidnapped a toddler, and during a search by the community, he was allegedly seen leaving the child at a tavern.

The father is accused of raping and impregnating his biological daughter in July 2018, when she was 17.

In another case, a KZN father accused of raping his daughter and severely assaulting his wife and son was arrested in Eshowe and is expected to appear in court today for a bail application. The father is accused of grooming his daughter as a sex slave.
