Durban - Multiple South African Police Service uniforms and insignia were recovered by a private security company in the Durban city centre.

Pro Secure said that at approximately 11pm on Tuesday night, their SRU members were patrolling in the vicinity of Durban central business district when they noticed a suspicious man carrying black bags. The individual picked up his pace when he noticed the Pro Secure vehicle monitoring him.

“The SRU team immediately stopped the suspect who then dropped his bags and fled into a dark alley on Carlisle Street. Upon searching the bags, multiple types of SAPS uniforms and insignias were found,” Pro Secure said.

“These items could have been used by many different suspects in the future, to impersonate a police officer.”

Pro Secure said the uniforms and insignias were handed over to Durban Central SAPS for booking.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala confirmed the incident and said a security guard found the abandoned clothing on Carlisle Street.

“Clothing includes the following items: bulletproof, SAPS jersey, shirt, captain ranks, one school tie, black holster, SAPS ear protector and a knife,” Gwala said.
