Durban - Howick police are investigating a case of business robbery after the Howick post office was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash and a cellphone.

Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said it was alleged that at 10am on Tuesday three armed men entered the post office and forced everyone to lie on the floor.

“At gunpoint, they forced the manager to open the safe. They took an undisclosed amount of cash and a cellphone before fleeing the scene. No injuries were reported,” Ngcobo said.

On Wednesday morning, in a Facebook post, uMngeni Local Municipality DA councillor Hazel Lake said that on Tuesday the post office robbery vehicle was found in uMgungundlovu by the Umngeni Community Safety Network.

Lake added that the DA was proud of the municipality for covering the cost of mounting two cameras to cover the greater Howick and Merrivale areas.

Lake said supporting the security initiative with funds as was done by the previous administration was important.

On Tuesday, mayor Chris Pappas had said that at a recent community policing forum meeting at the Scouts Hall, the members present mentioned that they were trying to raise funds to install two gantry-mounted cameras to help fully cover the greater Howick and Merrivale area.

“On behalf of the uMngeni Municipality, we are pleased to announce that as part of our commitment to building safer communities we will be covering the R35 000 that it will cost to install one of these gantry-mounted cameras,” Pappas said.

He said the administration would now process all the necessary paperwork and once all legal requirements had been met, the municipality would make the contribution.

“We hope that this will go a long way towards creating safer communities.

“We thank you for continuing to pay for your rates. As our financial situation improves we will be able to assist with more projects that help us to make progress,” Pappas said.
