Durban - Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after two people were killed in a crash at the foothills of the Drakensberg, western KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday morning.
Underberg Emergency Medical Services (UEMS) spokesperson Kate Bodmann said that at 6.50am, the emergency service was called out for a crash along the Sani Pass Road in the vicinity of the KwaPitela turn-off.
Bodmann said that on arrival paramedics found a single vehicle that had lost control on a sharp bend, left the roadway and rolled, landing on its roof in a drain.
“UEMS paramedics found that two occupants were severely trapped in the vehicle and could only access the occupants through the boot. Unfortunately on gaining access and assessing both occupants, they showed no signs of life and were declared deceased by paramedics,” Bodmann said.
She said the Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Fire Department had to use specialised equipment to extricate the bodies of the deceased.
Bodmann added that UEMS would like to express their sincere condolences to the friends and family of both occupants.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said Himeville SAPS were investigating a case of culpable homicide.
“It is alleged that today at 7:20, a vehicle overturned on Sani Pass Road near the KwaPitela turn-off. Two occupants were declared dead at the scene.”
