DURBAN - Police Search and Rescue and K9 Search and Rescue have recovered the bodies of two women who drowned in a similar way in KwaZulu-Natal.

On Saturday morning, Pietermaritzburg Search and Rescue and Pietermaritzburg K9 Search and Rescue members were called to assist Himeville SAPS with a body recovery.

Police said circumstances surrounding the incident were still under investigation.

“The driver of a vehicle lost control and drove into the Sani Valley Lodge dam. The driver managed to escape. The passenger was trapped inside the vehicle. All the necessary role-players were informed. K9 Chazz was utilised and an area was pointed out,” police said.

“A dive operation was conducted and the vehicle was located. Members recovered the body from the vehicle and handed the body over to station members from Himeville police station.”

An inquest docket was opened at Himeville SAPS.

In an earlier incident, Pietermaritzburg Search and Rescue and Pietermaritzburg K9 Search and Rescue officers recovered the body of a missing woman, 38, who was presumed to have drowned after she attempted to cross a low-level crossing and got stuck in a river last Wednesday.

The police were called out to the Henley Dam area where a vehicle was swept off a low-level crossing in the Plessislaer area.

Police said that on Thursday they returned to the Henley Dam to continue searching for the missing woman. Her body was recovered and an inquest docket was opened at the Plessislaer police station for investigation.
