Durban — The Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (Psira) said it would be investigating the incident pertaining to a viral video of a man being held by one security guard while being beaten by another for allegedly stealing.

On Twitter, Psira said: “We have identified which security company the officers work for and we are investigating the incident.”

On Wednesday a video went viral of a man who had allegedly stuffed jars of peanut butter and possibly other items onto his person and was then beaten by a security guard while another held him and a third person recorded the video.

In the video, while an officer removes two jars from the alleged thief’s person, the man is heard crying out that he is sorry.

On the floor, there are other jars of products that cannot be identified.

He says he is employed, they can check, and he could even give the guards a phone number.

Although at times the man was inaudible, he can be heard saying: “I’m really sorry. How could I be beaten for this… I’m sorry I will pay, I will pay.”

Then, the security guard starts beating him with a baton.

He continues to say: “I will pay ‘baba’, I will pay, oh my God, I’m sorry, I’m sorry ‘wema’ (mom), I’m sorry please brother, I’m sorry brother, I’m sorry, I’m sorry brother, please forgive me, I will pay, ‘wema’ (mom)… ”

Reacting to the video on Twitter, this is what tweeps said:

@chrisiieykay said “I don't know what to think of this video honestly because the guy stole even if we feel sorry for him matter of fact he did steal”

@ChrisExcel102 said, “Isn’t this assault…”

@Mthunzi60657482 said, “He must open a case of assault. They were supposed to call the police & get him arrested, not bliksem him. Kodwa naye aaaaai”

@LagerMntumni said, “But does the law allow the guy with the baton to do this? I don't think so”
