Durban - Those who saw video footage of Umlazi residents risking their lives by crossing a partly sunken road after recent heavy rains and flooding were left flabbergasted.

Since the start of the week, people in Durban and South Africa have called for employers to be understanding if and when employees could not get to work.

Moreover, people were advised to stay at home and not risk travelling if it was dangerous.

However, with weather conditions easing and floodwaters subsiding, many Umlazi residents woke up and headed to work on Wednesday morning.

The sunken part of the road stood between them and losing their jobs. On the other side was a taxi rank where they could get transport.

In one of the videos that went viral on social media a group of people are seen waiting their turn to cross the road.

Some people crossed it by walking along the edges of the bridge and then jumping over a small gap to get to the other side.

The brave jumped onto the sand and sunken road in order to make it across.

One of the voices that could be heard in the video said people were taking a risk because they were in a rush to get to work.

He said even women were risking their lives. If a piece of the road or ledge broke off, the worst could happen.

One woman, when it was her turn to cross, took her time, out of fear.

In the comments section on Twitter, one person said their nephew was dismissed for being absent.

Another said she would rather lose that job.
