DURBAN - Young woman killed in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands on Monday afternoon after two vehicles crashed.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said Nottingham SAPS were investigating a case of culpable homicide.

“It is alleged that on March 14, 2022, at 4pm, an accident occurred on R103 Old Main road near Notting Hill where two vehicles were involved in a collision,” Gwala said.

“A 26-year-old woman died at the scene while both drives sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for medical attention.”

Midlands EMS spokesperson Roland Robertson said their ambulances responded to the scene.

Robertson said when their paramedics arrived, they noticed two vehicles with extensive damage.

“Crews found one patient entrapped in the vehicle and sadly showed no signs of life and was declared deceased on scene. A second person from the vehicle sustained critical injuries and required urgent advanced life support intervention. One other person sustained moderate injuries from the other vehicle,” Robertson said.

He said all patients were treated and transported to hospital for further care.

Police had not commented by the time of publication.

Earlier, Midlands EMS had responded to a collision that left a family of four injured, also on the R103 in Lions River.

Robertson said upon arrival the Midlands EMS Howick advanced life support ambulance found that two vehicles had been involved in a head-on collision.

“A family of four sustained injuries ranging from moderate to serious,” Robertson said.

He said all patients were treated on scene before being transported to hospital for further care.

In an unrelated incident, Midlands EMS Pietermaritzburg crews transported a four-month-old patient to the Wits Donald Gordon Facility in Gauteng.

Robertson said it was a very long journey through some horrendous weather but they are all there safely.

Midlands EMS also wished the patient a speedy recovery.
