Durban — A young adult was shot and injured during a shooting at a tuck shop in Phoenix on Friday.

Though it is unclear whether the victim was aged 18 or 19, private security and their medical emergency services and police rushed to the scene on Friday afternoon.

Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram said a teenager was shot after gunmen opened fire at a tuck shop at Peta lPark Place in Shastri Park.

Balram said that Rusa arrived on the scene at about 2.04pm and found emergency services in attendance.

“It was established that two occupants of a white Ford Fiesta (registration unknown) opened fire on the tuck shop. The teenager was shot in his arm while two other individuals escaped injury. The injured male was transported privately to a medical facility,” Balram said.

He said, according to witnesses, the suspects’ getaway car sped off once the shooting started leaving the gunmen behind. The two continued firing shots before they fled into a bush.

“The motive for the shooting was not immediately established,” Balram said.

KZN VIP spokesperson Gareth Naidoo also said that the suspects were using a white Ford Fiesta and the registration was unconfirmed.

Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said it was alleged by a 48-year-old that he was at a business premise with four other people when two unknown suspects fired shots at them.

“A 19-year-old man sustained injuries and was rushed to hospital for medical attention. A case of attempted murder was reported at Phoenix SAPS for investigation,” Ngcobo said.
