Durban — A man is expected to appear in court on Monday (today) for a cash-in-transit heist that happened in northern KwaZulu-Natal earlier this year.
KZN Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said that last Thursday, Hawks members from Newcastle Serious Organised Crime Investigation, assisted by Orange Farm Visible Policing and Crime Intelligence, arrested a 37-year-old suspect for a cash-in-transit heist which happened in January this year.
“It is alleged that a cash van was travelling from Ekuvukeni to Ladysmith when unknown suspects opened fire towards it. They fired shots until the vehicle stopped. They then robbed the security guards of their service firearms, used explosives to blow up the cash van and took an undisclosed amount of cash.
“The suspects fled in their getaway vehicles which were later found abandoned not far from the crime scene,” Mhlongo said.
He said a case of cash-in-transit heist was reported at Ezakheni police station and “necessary role-players” attended the crime scene.
“The case docket was allocated to the Hawks members for further investigation hence the suspect was arrested,” Mhlongo said. “He is expected to appear in the Ezakheni Magistrate’s Court today (Monday). More arrests are expected.”
