The car park was full, which is always a good sign. And the welcoming was friendly and efficient. The restaurant is airy and has great ambience. I chose a seat where I could watch what remained of the second half of the Boks-All Blacks Test.

Our friends arrived, and after a craft beer or two and some soft drinks, we ordered starters.

The southern style chicken livers (R54), panned with onion, herbs, cayenne pepper, smoked paprika, tomato and cream, produced a superb sauce to be soaked up with crusty bread.

My Gorgonzola and Parmesan crusted snails (R59) were equally delicious, while my wife was approving of the hearty vegetable soup (R59).

We had brought along some red wine (corkage R40), and this called for a good steak.

Our friend ordered a 600g T-bone (R159) and mash with a superb Manhattan sauce made up of white wine, garlic, lemon juice and cream (R30). He had to take some home.

His wife had an excellent butternut, chickpea and sweet potato casserole (R110), while my wife had the Yankee fish cakes, served with fries and coleslaw (R99), which she described as pleasant.

I had a 300g rump (R129) with a roasted wild mushroom sauce (R30). The steak, done rare, was tender and the chips crunchy.

The restaurant was busy, with most tables in the main dining area taken. It was a great way to enjoy a Saturday evening with friends.

We shared our enjoyable desserts of panna cotta and crème brûlée with coffees and brandies.

This is a fun restaurant, but people in Kloof don’t mess about. By 10pm we were the last to leave, but we plan to return.
