DURBAN – THE eThekwini Municipality has plans to enter into an arrangement with the Independent Police Investigative Directive (Ipid) to improve accountability within the city’s metro police unit.

During an executive committee meeting yesterday, the municipality revealed that it intended to ratify a memorandum of understanding with Ipid, the SAPS and metro police.

Ipid is responsible for investigating members of the SAPS that have been implicated in wrongdoing.

It was not immediately clear if that is a role it might play with regard to the metro police and councillors did not clarify the parameters of the partnership.

The plan was approved by the exco on Tuesday shortly before the meeting collapsed.

A report on the matter said the memorandum of understanding to be entered into by Ipid, SAPS and Durban Metropolitan Police Service would enhance accountability.

“Authority be granted for the acting city manager to enter into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Ipid, SAPS and metro, which MOU seeks to create a manner of interaction and/or co-operation between all parties on matters pertaining to the policing of the eThekwini Municipal area.”

Last year, there were media reports that stated that a forensic investigation into the metro police had established widespread wrongdoing. It stated that there had been reports of corruption and errant behaviour.
