DURBAN - EThekwini Municipality says that organisers of Operation Dudula have not been granted permission to march in the city this Sunday.
This comes after Operation Dudula movement national organiser Zandile Dabula told the media on Tuesday that they were going ahead with the march on Sunday.
“After two previous attempts to hold the march in Durban we are happy that we will be able to march on Sunday,” Dabula said on Tuesday.
However eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela denied that the city had granted permission for the march.
“The city denounces disinformation by the Dudula movement to the effect that it has granted it permission to march this Sunday. The application is currently being drafted and will then proceed to the office of the city manager for approval or not,” said Mayisela.
He pointed out that the municipality followed the rule of law, where people could exercise their rights without infringing on other people’s rights.
“EThekwini Municipality permanently subscribes to the Constitution of the republic that guarantees the right to march. However, it has an inalienable responsibility of satisfying itself that marches are within the parameters of the law and devoid of any threats to the rights of other citizens,” the spokesperson emphasised.
The movement has recently been making headlines in Gauteng by forcefully shutting down shops owned by foreign nationals, and recently its leader Nhlanhla “Lux” Dlamini was arrested after he allegedly led a similar activity.
Attempts to get comment from Dabula were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
