DURBAN - A fire at the Sundumbili Waterworks in Mandeni at the weekend is expected to result in a water outage which will affect Mandeni and KwaDukuza residents.

The municipality said a transformer exploded, leading to a fire at the pump station at midday on Sunday.

It said due to a quick response from municipal staff and Sappi fire management teams, the fire was put out before it spread to other parts of the plant.

According to iLembe District Municipality operations manager for the Mandeni areas, Xolelwa Mazibuko, there were no injuries.

“Eskom has been alerted and is on the way to assess. We hope they will be able to speed up the replacement (of the transformer). We are in the meantime assessing the damages on the iLembe side,” said Mazibuko.

She said residents and businesses in Mandeni and other parts of the district were made aware that the fire would hinder the supply of water.

“We will experience (a) water outage as soon as the current water levels drop, which will affect consumers with yard connections as well as those who receive water through water tankers in all of Mandeni.

“KwaDukuza consumers will also be affected since we have water tankers that supply them which collect water at Sundumbili Waterworks,” she said.

Speaking to The Mercury on Monday, the municipality said an assessment of the plant was under way.
