The Artscape theatre complex has been alive with the sound of children - some of the best child performers in Cape Town to be exact.

Rehearsals are under way for young actors ahead of the Cape Town season of The Sound Of Music, which begins on May 6 on the Artscape Opera stage.

Auditions were held earlier this year when the search went out for children who could not only act and dance the roles of Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta or Gretl, but who could also sing some of the most beloved songs of all time: Do-Re-Mi, So Long, Farewell, My Favourite Things and The Sound of Music.

Two groups of child actors will alternate in playing the beloved Von Trapp family singers during the season’s eight performances a week. So were you to call out any of their character’s names while they are busy learning their moves, lines and songs, you would be answered with a stereophonic “Present!”.

“These children are simply the best in Cape Town and watching their

talents and confidence blossom

during the rehearsal process is magnificent,” says resident director Anton Luitingh.

This West End production has toured the world, and along the way has fostered local child performers in each city where it has played.

The perennial family favourite has been as far afield as Sri Lanka, Singapore, New Zealand, the Philippines, China and now, due to an unprecedented demand, the show is returning to South Africa.

The Sound of Music runs from May 6 until May 27.

Tickets can be purchased through Computicket and Shoprite booking kiosks nationwide or call
